چکیده مقاله:

With the discovery of antibiotics, the healthcare community believed that the war against infectious diseases was over. However, now that many bacteria and viruses have become resistant to multiple antimicrobial agents, it seems that the battle has intensified in favor of bacteria and viruses. Infectious diseases are currently one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide. An assessment of these diseases by the World Health Organization (WHO) has shown that lower respiratory infections, diarrheal diseases, HIV/AIDS, and malaria are among the top ten causes of illness and death. Targeted drug delivery involves activities that lead to the accumulation of pharmaceutical substances in a specific area of the body. The main advantage of using targeted drug delivery is the enhancement of therapeutic effects of drugs without inducing side effects on organelles, tissues, or healthy cells. Engineered microorganisms have the potential to function as biological thermostats, producing therapeutic agents only in response to demand. The use of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) is expected to see broader acceptance in medicine, particularly in treating antibiotic resistance, cancer, and diseases that are currently untreatable. Furthermore, significant research is currently underway in the field of using bacteria for drug delivery, showing promising results in both preclinical and clinical settings
