چکیده مقاله:
Introduction: In pediatric patients, pain often arises during diagnostic and therapeutic procedures. Children commonly harbor a fear of these procedures, particularly punctures, which are felt as a physical intrusion through the skin barrier. Anxiety and tension can exacerbate the pain experience, depleting their mental and physical resources. In this regard, strategies such as play therapy emerges as a crucial opportunity for communication and the restoration of a sense of normality in patient’s lives. Materials and Methods: A systematic search was conducted in databases such as Scopus, PubMed and Web of science. The search included keywords such as play therapy, pediatric cancer, pain management, childhood cancer. Results: Supportive and palliative care approaches like play therapy play an important role in managing pain of pediatric patients. In medical settings, interactive toys, electronic games, and virtual reality (VR) are commonly used as active distraction techniques. Children undergoing cancer treatment may develop fear of medical equipment, which can cause discomfort. By familiarizing children with the tools, diverting their focus, and empowering them, playing with toys and games can help reduce anxiety levels. Conclusions: Play therapy has been shown to effectively reduce physical and psychosocial issues in children who are battling cancer. By engaging in play therapy, children are able to better adjust to their illness, improve their mental well-being, develop coping skills, and feel a sense of normalcy in their lives.
