چکیده مقاله:
The use of osseointegrated implants in treating edentulism has greatly transformeddentistry and improved the quality of life for patients. To achieve optimal results withosseointegrated implants, it is essential to have sufficient bone volume at the implantation site.Guided bone regeneration (GBR) is one of the most effective methods for restoring lost bone, thereby facilitating the complete integration of the implant. A crucial component of the GBRtechnique is the use of barrier membranes. This article discusses various materials used for thesemembranes, categorizing them into absorbable and non-absorbable types. Non-absorbablemembranes include expanded forms of PTFE and high-density PTFE. absorbable membranes suchas collagen and aliphatic polyesters like PCL, PGA. Moreover, recent advances in materials such asincorporating antibacterial agents and nanoparticles into membranes are mentioned. furthermore, design criteria and mechanical characteristics of barrier membranes such as porosity, meshing, surface roughness, plasticity and rigidity, and multi-layered structures are discussed. it can beconcluded that there is still no optimal size range for pore size. Balancing between contradictorymechanical features should be considered in further developments. The growth and orientation ofbone can be determined by using barrier membranes.in addition, the amount of bone growth getscontrolled by utilizing different materials. Finally, by taking materials aspect and designconsiderations into account, a promising result can be achieved.
