This research focused on enhancing the properties of hydroxyapatite (HAp) coatings by incorporatingvarious concentrations of tantalum pentoxide (Ta۲O۵) nanoparticles, ranging from ۰ to ۱.۵ g/L, into theelectrolyte solution. The HAp-Ta۲O۵ composite coatings were applied to Ti۶Al۴V metallic implantsusing the plasma electrolytic oxidation technique. X-ray diffraction tests indicated that increasing theconcentration of Ta۲O۵ nanoparticles did not significantly affect the phase composition of the coatings.However, the coatings became denser and rougher when ۱.۵ g/L of Ta۲O۵ nanoparticles were added to thesolution. The improved microstructural properties of the HAp-۱.۵ g/L Ta۲O۵ composite coating resultedin a notable increase in mechanical properties, with more than a ۴۰% improvement in both microhardnessand bonding strength compared to HAp alone. The corrosion resistance of the coated implants wasevaluated using potentiodynamic polarization tests. The introduction of Ta۲O۵ nanoparticles into the HApcoating led to a ۷۲% reduction in corrosion current density, demonstrating their significant contribution toenhanced corrosion protection.
