The aimof this study was to examine the association between postpartum depression (PPD) in parents and psychologicalfactors. Methods: The present study was a cohort study of ۱۵۰ couples conducted at Vali Asr and Milad hospitals in Tehranusing convenience sampling over a period of three years. The data were assessed through Beck DepressionInventory (BDI), Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS), Dyadic Adjustment Scale, Parents ExpectationSurvey, Social Support Questionnaire, and Parenting Stress Index in three time periods. Results: In this study, symptoms of depression were found in ۳۹.۹% of pregnant women and ۵۸.۷% of men duringthe last trimester of pregnancy based on the BDI. EPDS, depressive symptoms were observed in ۴۳.۳% of themothers and ۲۲.۷% of the fathers' immediately after childbirth and in ۱۷.۲% of the mothers and ۱۳.۳% of the fathersfour weeks postpartum. PPD and depression four weeks postpartum were significantly associated with psychologicalvariables such as parental expectations, parental stress (P<۰.۰۰۰۱), and marital adjustment (P>۰.۰۵). Analyticalstatistical methods, including Pearson correlation and regression analysis, were used to analyze the data. Conclusion: These findings emphasize the importance of psycho-social factors in PPD among parents, as well asthe reciprocal influence of the depression among parents on each other. It is suggested that professionals in the fieldsof reproductive and mental health conduct preconception screening.
