Cold metal forming of a structural profile by polyethylene Teflon-filler

This article introduce a new method to produce astructural profile by shaping thin-walled circular tubes intwo different conditions of empty and polyethyleneTeflon-filled by experimental method. For this purpose,some thin-walled brazen tubes were prepared and some ofthem were filled by the Teflon. The empty and filledspecimens were laterally compressed between a rigidplaten and a U-shape die in quasi-static condition. Bycompressing the tubes into the die, the desirable structuralprofile is produced. Some parameters are introduced asdeviation factor to evaluate the final products. Somesimilar tubes were filled by different cross section shapesof Teflon to investigate effects of Teflon geometry on thecold metal forming process. Also, influences of presenceof Teflon-filler, Teflon length and tube diameter arestudied on final products. Furthermore, a single stage anda double stage forming process were performed on thespecimens. The results show that a double stage formingprocess on a circular tube that has been filled by a cubicTeflon with an initial length equal to the tube lengthresults in the best profile, in the studied cases.
