Propylthiouracil (PTU) and thionamides such as carbimazole and methimazole (MMT) (Tapazole) are the most common drugs in the treatment of hyperthyroidism. Both of these drugs inhibit the conversion of T۴ to T۳ outside the thyroid gland, but their full effect only appears after a few weeks. The most common side effects of these drugs are agranulocytosis (the most serious complication) and thrombocytopenia. Symptoms of this condition include fever, pain and swelling and bleeding gums, sore throat, sores inside the mouth, persistent cough, and shortness of breath. It is a suitable medicine for pregnancy.It is the most common treatment used in the elderly. The goal of treatment with radioactive iodine (Iodine ۱۳۱) is to destroy overactive thyroid cells (symptoms subside after ۳-۴ weeks). The patient should be monitored for symptoms of thyroid storm. Using Inderal is very helpful in controlling these symptoms. It is forbidden to use radioactive iodine during pregnancy.
