Examining the entry of »Ghadir Khumm« in Oliver Leaman’s Qur'anic Encyclopedia

During the Prophet's farewell pilgrimage, one of the most significant events, which are documented in the history of Islam was Ghadir Khumm. Until the present time, various scholars (Muslims and non-Muslims alike) have studied this historical event and several literal works in the forms of books, articles, theses, etc. have been published to date. One of such literal works by the Orientalists, which focuses on Ghadir Khumm is a one-volume Qur'anic encyclopedia titled "The Qur'an: An Encyclopedia" by Professor Oliver Leaman.This research work aims to examine and critically review the entry entitled "Ghadir Khumm" written by Dr Asma Afsaruddin in this Qur'anic encyclopedia. In the first instance, an overview of the Qur'anic encyclopedia and a brief academic biography of the author are done. Thereafter, the report and a critical review of the entry were done while both the areas of its strength and weakness are enumerated.Meanwhile, the collected data were analyzed using a descriptive-analytical method to reach the research outcome. The findings showed that the entry has both areas of strength and weakness. The simplicity of language and expressions; conciseness, and a comparative approach are among its distinctive features while the lack of necessary details and references, an incorrect assertion and a wrong conclusion are among the areas of weakness of this entry.
