Effect of Turmeric Extract on Serum Adiponectin Levels, Esteroid Hormone Profiles and Sexual Function in Stressed Women: A Randomized Triple-Blind Controlled Clinical Trial

Background & aim: Sexual dysfunction will result from chronic stress Stressors negatively affect sexual activity, and estrogen and progesterone increase female libido. Additionally, adiponectin increases these hormones release, and many plants can  increase serum adiponectin. Thus, this study examined the effect of turmeric extracts on serum adiponectin, steroid hormone profiles and sexual function in stressed women.Methods: In this randomized clinical trial, ۵۷ women with moderate to severe stress and poor sexual function visited the gynecology clinic of a  teaching hospital affiliated with Iran University of Medical Sciences, Tehran, Iran from August until April ۲۰۲۰.  Sampling was done by convenience method and then participants were randomly assigned to the intervention and control groups. The intervention group received ۳۰۰ mg of turmeric extract daily for four weeks, while the control group used a placebo containing ۵۰۰ mg of starch. Tools used include the demographic form, the Depression Anxiety Stress Scale (DASS) and the Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI). Adiponectin, estradiol, progesterone, steress and sexual function  were measured in all participants before and four weeks after the intervention.  Data analysied by SPSS (version ۱۴).Results: Results showed a significant difference between the two groups in terms of post-intervention adiponectin (P<۰.۰۰۱), estradiol (P=۰.۰۰۶), and progesterone (P<۰.۰۰۱). The  effect of turmeric extract on serum adiponectin levels, esteroid hormone profiles and sexual function post-intervention sexual function scores indicated a significant difference between the two groups (P<۰.۰۰۱).Conclusion: Turmeric can enhance sexual function and estradiol hormone profiling. Women can improve their sexual lives by consuming turmeric-containing foods.
