Engobes can be defined as liquid clay slips of varying compositions which are the applied to the surface of a ceramic tile. Engobes constitute a kind of the undercoat whose sole purpose is to cover the tile body and make it uniform for application of the subsequent glaze. Engobe needs to be drying firing and thermal expansion compatible with both the underlying body and overlying glaze. In this study, new engobes were developed with a variety of SiO۲/Al۲O۳ and SiO۲/ZrSiO۲ ratios, which the effect of that ratio on the performance and opacity of floor tile engobes by various physics tests investigated. It has been observed that the variety of amount of SiO۲/Al۲O۳ and SiO۲/ZrSiO۲ in sample composition could be optimized in many cases such as the refractoriness, the amount of water absorption from the sides (adhesive used in tile installation), also opacity levels (the color difference (E)) value relative to the standard surface was accepted able for visual perception for often of samples. Other items such as water absorption from the sides and planarity of the floor tile samples were found to compatible with the stand composition.
