Preparation and investigation of Silver doped Cadmium Tungstate/Polystyrene nanocomposite scintillator for alpha particle detection

In this study, cadmium tungstate (CdWO۴) and Silver-doped cadmium tungstate (CdWO۴: Ag)/polystyrene (PS) nanocomposite films were successfully prepared. Highly luminescent powders were synthesized by a simple co-precipitation method. XRD, EDX, and FTIR analysis techniques confirmed that CdWO۴ and CdWO۴: Ag nanopowders were successfully prepared. According to the FESEM images, the mean size of particles was estimated about ۳۴۵ and ۲۶۷ nm for CdWO۴ and CdWO۴: Ag nanopowders, respectively. The luminescence properties of the synthesized NPs were examined under UV radiation. CdWO۴: Ag nanoparticles exhibited the most intense emission in the blue-green range compared to the pure CdWO۴ sample. The radiation response of samples was measured using ۲۴۱Am alpha source. The counting rate in the doped sample was improved significantly compared with the CdWO۴ composite. CdWO۴: Ag composite showed acceptable counting efficiency which is comparable with the other expensive alpha counters. Investigations revealed that CdWO۴: Ag /polystyrene nanocomposite can be a valuable scintillation material for radiation detection applications.
