چکیده مقاله:

The mechanism by which ballasted agents interact with flocs generated during the coagulation/flocculation process is not thoroughly comprehended. This study aimed to examine the interaction between a ballasted agent and flocs by evaluating how the ballasted agent affects the development of flocs and, consequently, the removal of suspended particles in water. Ballasted flocculation was performed by jar tests, in which the amount of flocculant and sand was adjusted between different ranges. The highest level of turbidity removal, reaching around ۹۵%, can be seen when using less flocculant with respect to sand. An excessive amount of sand caused the production of early flocs, which settled rapidly without effectively removing suspended particles during sweep coagulation. This finding demonstrated that the addition of the ballasted agent would have an impact on the coagulation-flocculation process and, consequently, the elimination of suspended particles. This study suggests that more investigation should be conducted to examine the effects of the ballasted agent on various coagulation-flocculation mechanisms. The aim is to ensure that suspended solids can be efficiently removed within a short settling period while maintaining the high quality of treated water.
