Hydrogen is increasingly recognized as a critical element in the advancement and incorporation ofrenewable energy sources (RESs) in contemporary power systems. Serving as a key energy storagesystem (ESS), hydrogen plays a crucial role in ensuring stability and reliability within the power grid.With its notable energy density, substantial storage capacity, and rapid operational capabilities, hydrogenis swiftly becoming a favored option among ESSs. In a hydrogen energy system, hydrogen stored in thehydrogen storage system is transformed into direct current (DC) power by a hydrogen fuel cell duringpower shortages. Conversely, excess power from the grid is converted into hydrogen by an electrolyzer,which is then stored in the hydrogen storage system. These processes require the implementation ofvarious systems to enable the connection of fuel cells and electrolyzers to the power grid, includingpower electronic converters and DC link regulation control systems. In this paper, we will have acomprehensive examination of the current challenges related to this source of renewable energy and theaspects of integrating hydrogen energy storage technologies into modern power grids. By focusing onthe integration of renewable energy sources, this paper aims to assist researchers in a comprehensiveunderstanding of the current state and future possibilities of hydrogen energy storage systems.
