چکیده مقاله:

Background: Varicocele is an abnormal enlargement of thepampiniform venous plexus and blood blockage in the spermaticcord. Among major effects on male fertility is oxidativestress and metabolites re ex to testicles, which in turn have asignificant part in producing free radicals [reactive oxygen species(=ROS]. As a micronutrient, selenium has an antioxidantcharacteristic to normal spermatogenesis and combats oxidativestress. The present study aimed at examining selenium effects,as an antioxidant ele- ment) on sperm parameters (spermcount, motility, morphology) in varicocele rats.Materials and Methods: This study was a case-control. It wasdone in ۲۰۱۷ in the Qazvin University of Medical Scienceson ۲۴ male Rats that were divided randomly to four ۶-subjectgroups of control, sham, varicocele, and treated varicocele. Adaily ۰.۲-mg selenium diet was injected intraperitoneally to thetreated varicocele group. After four weeks, sperm indices wereexam- ined among all the groups and the data was analyzed byone-way ANOVA.Results: All the indices in this study (sperm count, motility andmorphology) had a significant decline in the varicocele groupcompared to the control group (P<۰.۰۵). Results also indicatedan effect of seleni- um as an antioxidant on the number of spermas well as their motility. This led to improvement of these parametershaving no effects on sperm morphology among varicocelerats. Conclusion: Results showed that, as an antioxidant, seleniumeliminated free radicals in varicocele rats indicating its effectivenesson varicocele-dependent infertility.
