The Effects of Time Interval between Sperm Processing and Intrauterine Insemination on Pregnancy Rate

Background: Intrauterine insemination (IUI) is a simple andinexpensive method that has been utilized for fertility treatmentof infertile couples. Because the limited survival time of spermatozoa,timing in IUI is one of clinical factors that may haveinfluence on pregnancy rate. However, there is no consensus onthe effects of time interval between sperm processing and IUIon pregnancy rate. The aim of present study was to evaluate thedifference of pregnancy outcome on time interval between semenprocessing and IUI.Materials and Methods: Data were collected retrospectivelyfrom one hundred twenty eight patients who were referred forinfertility treatment. After conventional semen analysis, sampleswere prepared by swim-up method and followed by incubationat ۳۷◦ C. According to time interval between sperm processingand insemination, the patients were divided into fourgroups: <۳۰ minutes, ۳۰-۵۹ minutes, ۶۰-۱۱۹ minutes and ≥۱۲۰minutes. All data were compared among groups.Results: The mean age of patients was ۳۴.۴۹ ± ۶.۹۸. Therewas no significant difference in sperm concentration, motilityand morphology before and after semen processing amongfour groups. No significant difference was seen in pregnancyrate among four groups (۲۸.۹, ۲۱.۴, ۱۰, ۲۸.۶% respectively,P=۰.۲۷۵). Logistic regression analysis indicated that there wasno relation between time interval between semen processingand IUI and pregnancy outcome.Conclusion: According to the results, prolonged incubation ofprocessed samples has no negative effects on pregnancy outcome.This attitude allows laboratories for workload management.
