Protective Effect of Aloe Vera Gel Extract Against Adverse Effect of Doxorubicin on Mice Ovary

Background: Doxorubicin is one of the most important anticancerchemotherapy drugs that are widely used to treat solidtumors and leukemia. This drug has side effects on most organssuch as ovaries. Aloe Vera is one of the oldest medicinal plantsthat has high antioxidant properties. The present study showthat Aloe vera gel protect from mouse ovary structure againstDoxorubicin.Materials and Methods: For this aim, female NMRI micewere divided into four groups. Doxorubicin group receivedDOX ۳ mg/kg/wt intraperitoneally on days ۷, ۱۴, ۲۱, and ۲۸.Doxorubicin/Aloe vera group received DOX ۳ mg/kg/wt intraperitoneallyon days ۷, ۱۴, ۲۱, and ۲۸ and Aloe vera gel extract۲۰۰ mg/kg/wt daily for ۲۸ days. Aloe vera group received Aloevera gel extract ۲۰۰ mg/kg/wt daily for ۲۸ days and controlgroup received nothing.Results: The Doxorubicin showed significantly decreases inthe body weights and diameter of the ovary and injury to bloodvessels and fibrosis of the ovarian cortex also significantly increasedthe number of atresia follicles at different stages ofgrowth. Doxorubicin/ Aloe vera group showed significantly recoveryin abovementioned parameters.Conclusion: The results indicated that Aloe vera gel can improvethe damage caused by doxorubicin to the ovary and protectthe ovary from the harmful effects of doxorubicin.
