Evaluation of Sperm Parameters and Lipid Peroxidation in Male Rats Induced by Varicocele

چکیده مقاله:
Background: Varicocele is introduced as one of the main causesof infertility in men and is accompanied with the abnormaldilatation, elongation and tortuosity of the pampiniform plexusveins of the spermatic cord. Several studies showed that levelof oxidative stress is high in infertile men with varicocele andis considered as a key element in the pathophysiology of varicocele.Therefore, in this study, we aimed to compare spermparameters and lipid peroxidation as oxidative stress marker invaricocelized rats.Materials and Methods: For this study, ۳۰ adult male Wistarrats were considered and varicocele induction was performedon ۱۰ male rats. Twenty rats were considered as control andsham groups. After two months of varicocele induction, all therats were sacrificed and epididymides were dissected. Then,sperm parameters and sperm lipid peroxidation were assessedby WHO protocol, and Bodipy staining. Differences withingroups were compared by one-way analyses of variance (ANOVA)using a post hoc test (Turkey). Collected data were presentedas mean ± standard error of mean (SEM) and P< ۰.۰۵was considered to be significant.Results: The result of this study showed that mean of spermconcentration, motility and morphology significantly decreased in varicocele induction group compared to control and shamgroups (P<۰.۰۵), while mean percentage of sperm lipid peroxidationsignificantly increased in varicocelized rats compared tocontrol and sham groups (P<۰.۰۰۱).Conclusion: Therefore, low quality of sperm parameters invaricocele status might be associated with the role of seminalreactive oxygen species in mediating such damage.
