The Effect of Royal Jelly on Follicular Development in Female Rats

Background: The aim of present study was to evaluate the effectof RJ on some reproductive parameters in adult female rats.Materials and Methods: Twenty-eight adult female rats (۱۸۰-۲۰۰ gr) were divided into four groups (n=۷ /group). Controlgroup received ۰.۵ ml distilled water intraperitoneally (i.p), experimental groups received: ۱۰۰, ۲۰۰ and ۴۰۰ mg/kg/bodyweight doses of RJ daily for ۱۴ days respectively. Animals weresacrificed and ovaries were dissected for histopathologic examination;the serum levels of ovarian hormones were evaluated.The ratio of the ovarian and uterine weight to body weight wascalculated. One-way ANOVA was used for data analysis.Results: The body weight was significantly increased (P=۰.۰۰۴)in ۱۰۰, ۲۰۰ and ۴۰۰ mg/kg RJ treated animals. The serum levelsof progesterone (P=۰.۰۱۳) and estradiol (P=۰.۰۰۴) wereincreased in experimental groups significantly. In addition, histopathologicaldata of ovaries showed a significant increase inthe number of mature follicles and the number of corpora lutea(P=۰.۰۰۷).Conclusion: The overall results of the present study provideevidence on the ovarian folliculogenesis effect of RJ in femalerat.
