Effect of Aloe Vera Gel on Mice Testes Treated with Doxorubicin

چکیده مقاله:

Background: Chemotherapy drugs has temporary or permanentdamage effects on testes in males. Doxorubicin is one ofthe most commonly anti-cancer drugs that used for cure of cancer.The effect of Doxorubicin is dependent on dose and hasadverse effect on non-target tissue , such as the testes. Aloe verais a perennial herbaceous cactus-like that may keep the testeshealthy against the destructive effects of Doxorubicin and increasefertility. We studied the protective effect of Aloe vera gelon adverse effects of Doxorubicin on mice testes.Materials and Methods: Eight week old male adult NMRImice were divided into four groups. Control group; receivednothing, Doxorubicin group: Doxorubicin was injected ۴ timesintraperitoneally weekly for ۴ weeks (۳ mg / kg body weight),Aloe vera group: received Aloe vera gel (۲۰۰ mg / kg bodyweight) daily by intraperitoneal injection for ۲۸ days and Aloevera/Doxorubicin group: Doxorubicin and Aloe vera gel in theorder mentioned above were injected intraperitoneally. Aftertreatment the mice were sacrificed by cervical dislocation andteses and caudal epidim removed for histomprphometrical andsperm analysis.Results: Our results showed that Doxorubicin reduced thenumber of primary spermatocytes, round and elongated spermatidand decreased tissue parameters such as testes diameter,seminiferous tubule diameter and epitelium thickness significantlycompared to the control group, while Aloe vera increasedall tissue parameters compared to the Doxorubicin group. AlsoAloe vera increased significantly sperm count, viability andmotility compared to the Doxorubicin group that decreased inDoxorubicin group.Conclusion: We can say that Aloe vera has protective effect againstthe tissue damage caused by Doxorubicin on the mice testes.
