چکیده مقاله:

Background: Sperm freezing method is used frequently in assistedreproductive techniques, on the other hand in differentstudies negative effect of freezing have been shown on differentsperm parameters. The aim of this study was to determinethe effect of saffron extract as an antioxidant, on the differentsperm parameters in men with normal spermatogenesis afterfreezing-thawing process.Materials and Methods: In this case-control study, collectingof samples was done in ۲۰۱۵ year from the Infertility TreatmentCenter, ACECR Branch of Qazvin, Qazvin, Iran. These menhad normal spermatogenesis and their spouse had infertilityproblem. Semen samples were divided in two groups, control without saffron extract, and case with ۵۰ mg/ml saffron extract. Then, samples freezed with snap freezing method. After twoweeks, they were thawed and different sperm parameters wereassessed. Data were analyzed by two-tail T test. Results: Our results showed, mean percent of viability (۷۲ ±۰.۹۹), motility (۸۷ ± ۰.۴۳), and the number of sperm cells (۶۲.۵± ۳.۸) in treaded group was elevated significantly (P<۰.۰۱)compared to the control group (۴۶.۶ ± ۱.۱), (۶۲.۳ ± ۰.۳۳), and(۴۵ ± ۴.۳) respectively. However, the morphology did not showany significant difference (P>۰.۰۵).Conclusion: Our results showed that possibly antioxidantagents of saffron extract could scavenge free radicals and thus, optimize different sperm parameters (viability, motility, andnumber) after freezing and thawing.
