چکیده مقاله:

During the middle Miocene, the climate of Earth changed from a global warming period (the Miocene climatic optimum; MCO; ~۱۶.۹-۱۴.۷ Ma) into a colder period. The mid-Miocene climate transition (MMCT) represents a significant reorganization of the Earth’s climate system and is characterized by a large expansion of the Antarctic ice sheet between ~۱۵-۱۳ Ma and global cooling. During this prominent climate transition, drastic changes and reorganizations in global atmospheric circulation occurred. The Miocene history and evolution of the South Asian Monsoon (SAM) however, is not well understood and mainly derived from records of wind strength. Data for Miocene changes in rainfall are virtually non‐existent for peninsular India and the Arabian Sea prior to ۱۱ Ma, although this is the other important variable that defines the monsoon. To this end, this talk will present new proxy records of rainfall together with wind proxy record in order to outline a comprehensive picture of the evolution and development of the SAM during the middle Miocene.
