Acute Rheumatic Fever Review

Streptococcus pyogenes is a major human-specific bacterial pathogen that causes a wide array of manifestations ranging from mild localized infections to life-threatening invasive infections. Ineffective treatment of S. pyogenes infections can result in the postinfectious sequela acute rheumatic fever(ARF) and post-streptococcal glomerulonephritis. It is likely that many cases of ARF remain undiagnosed, given that many of those presenting with rheumatic heart disease (RHD) report no prior history of Acute rheumatic fever( ARF) . Timely and equitable access to health care and appropriate health care delivery have also been identified as barriers for those with ARF and RHD. While the last decade has seen improvement to these problems, existing data likely underestimate the true burden. In this review article, an attempt has been made to fully investigate this disease and its factors and how it occurs. Acute rheumatic fever (ARF) is a systemic inflammatory condition caused by an autoimmune response to a throat or skin infection with strains of the Streptococcus pyogenes bacterium, also known as group A Streptococcus. Rheumatic heart disease (RHD), the long-term consequence of ARF, refers to the chronic cardiac damage that accrues from severe or recurrent ARF episodes.
