An effective base isolation system for masonry buildings should use horizontally super-flexibleisolators placed with relatively short distances from each other beneath the tie-beams that carry theweight of the superstructure. In this paper, unbonded annular fiber-reinforced elastomeric isolatorswere employed in the seismic isolation of a ۲-story residential masonry building. Based onexperimental observations, the annular geometry of the isolators resulted in further horizontalflexibility, thus permitting their use at relatively shorter distances underneath the tie beams. Theproposed base isolation system also includes a simple uplift and excessive lateral displacementconstraint system that acts during extreme earthquake events beyond the design earthquake level. Thisensures the stable performance of the base isolation system at extreme limit states. Based on theequivalent lateral force (ELF) procedure and time history analysis (THA) results, the proposed baseisolation system was found effective for the seismic mitigation of masonry buildings
