Upcycling waste polycarbonate via blending with ABS: a sustainablesolution

The properties of polycarbonate after recycling will have a significant drop due to exposure to hightemperature and thermal degradation, oxidation and polymer chains scission, Therefore, the upcylingof the polycarbonate wastes is crucial in order to recycled polycarbonate to be a suitable substitutefor virgin polycarbonate, in engineering It is observed that through blending of recycledpolycarbonate with ABS and using a compatibilizer, it is possible to reach an optimal level of impactresistance. In this article, the impact resistance of polycarbonate recycled from CD was measured as۱.۴ Kj/m۲, which reached to ۲۴.۶۸ after blending with ABS at ۳۰% by weight and syntheticcompatibilizer at ۱% by weight (۱۷.۶ times ). Also, The SEM images taken from the blend show thefiner morphology of ABS islands due to the use of compatibilizer. The results propose a sustainablesolution for upcyling of polycarbonate waste through simple mlet blendig using proper amount ofABS and special compatibilizer.
