The Use of Paper Manufacturing Black Liquor in Preparing Carbon Blackas a Polymer Reinforcement Agent

In this study, carbon black (CB) as a common reinforcement agent for polymers was prepared fromthe black liquor, as a cheap byproduct of the wood pulping and paper-making process. The processinvolves removing the mineral impurities from the waste, neutralizing its highly alkaline environmentusing sulfuric acid, separating lignin and carbohydrates from the black liquor using centrifugation,dehydrating the lignin, and pyrolyzing it in an oxygen-free atmosphere. The resulting carbon blackis then washed with distilled water, followed by sequential washes with acidic and basic solutions,and finally with distilled water to achieve complete neutralization and purification. The carbon blackis then functionalized using sulfuric acid and nitric acid, followed by neutralization and washing withdistilled water and ethanol. The untreated CB and functionalized CB can be applied as effectivereinforcement agents in hydrophobic and hydrophilic polymer matrices.
