pre-Treatment of E-Glass fibers using Acid Etching Method

One of the pre- treatment methods of glass fibers is Acid etching. This modification activates thesurface of glass fibers to react with silane coupling agents more efficiently. In this study, E-type glassfibers were treated using concentrated sulfuric acid-hydrogen peroxide (Pirana solution), effectivelyincreasing the number of hydroxyl groups on the surface of fibers, resulting in a more hydrophilicsurface. The results of ATR -FT-IR analysis confirmed this successful acid activation process andsubsequently increased hydrophilicity of the fibers. In addition, the surface topology of the activatedfibers was studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM).
