The Synthesis of Furan Resin from the Monomer Produced Using theMeerwein-Ponndorf-Verley (MPV) Reduction of Furfural

The Meerwein-Ponndorf-Verley (MPV) reaction of furfural (FAld) was performed using ۲-propanolas both the solvent and hydrogen donor, along with a heterogeneous synthetic catalyst based onpolyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS). The MPV aimed to produce furfuryl alcohol (FAlc) at۱۲۰ and ۱۵۰ °C temperatures, over varying reaction times of ۱, ۲, ۴, ۶, and ۸ h. MPV samples wereanalyzed using a Gas chromatography flame ionization detector (GC-FID). The optimal results wereachieved at ۱۵۰ °C for ۸ h, yielding a FAld conversion rate of ۶۰.۴۹ % and a FAlc selectivity of۸۳.۲۱%. The FAlc monomer obtained from MPV reduction was afterward used to synthesize furanresin. FT-IR, ۱H-NMR, and GPC analysis characterized it with a PDI of ۲.۱۷۳.
