Structural reliability analysis by means of response surface methodology (RSM) evaluates different experimental points through finite element analysis. In the structures or systems with a large number of random variables, the computational cost of the classical selection strategy of Bucher experimental design could be high. In this paper, a new selection strategy for experimental points of RSM is proposed. The proposed strategy utilizes fewer points to construct the response surface model. This improves the efficiency of the method. Besides, the direction of the selected points varies depending on whether the last updated design point is located in safe or failure domain. This promotes the general performance of the method including its accuracy. Through numerical examples, the performance of the proposed method is illustrated.
