The effect of drying process in the laboratory dryer on medicinal plants

Drying is the most common method for maintaining the quality of aromatic and therapeutic herbs by reducing the moisture content. Laboratory dryers, as opposed to traditional drying procedures (such as sun and shade drying), provide stable and controllable conditions during the drying of light bulk material, resulting in minimum loss of content and composition of the medicinal plant's valuable active substances. Performance evaluation of the lab dryers regarding the essential oil yield and composition of the medicinal plants has attracted interest from researchers. Drying air temperature and air velocity of lab dryers are the most important items that contribute to achieve an adequate product quality attribute. However, different species exhibit distinct responses when they are subjected to various drying circumstances. This review intended to compile experimental studies on the effect of drying air temperature and velocity on the quality of essential oil in medicinal plants.
