MOFs-, COFs-and MOGs-assisted chemiluminescence methods

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), covalent organic frameworks (COFs), and metal–organic gels (MOGs) are promising catalysts for developing analytical applications of chemiluminescence (CL) methods. Furthermore, the synthesis of highly chemiluminescent MOFs and COFs is a recently developed approach that has garnered significant interest among scholars.۱,۲ This abstract is an evaluative review of the literature regarding the utilization of MOFs, COFs, and MOGs in CL assays. The scattered information found in scientific publications was gathered, evaluated, and categorized to derive refined insights into the application and efficacy of the aforementioned porous materials in CL-based analytical methods. Furthermore, in addition to presenting a comparative analysis of the analytical capabilities of the MOFs-, COFs-, and MOGs-CL procedures, the underlying mechanisms driving the CL reactions were explicated to comprehend how and why these porous materials aid in strengthening CL methodologies. Briefly, it appears that MOF-assisted CL systems have more published papers compared to COF- and MOG-assisted CL systems, possibly because MOFs were introduced earlier. MOFs, COFs, and MOGs have been used as catalysts to increase the intensity of CL systems, either in pristine or composite form. However, in general, composite porous materials are more effective catalysts than pristine porous materials. Among the porous materials discussed, bimetallic-MOFs have been shown to have the greatest catalytic impact on the CL reactions. Long-lasting CL systems that emit intense light for several hours have also been successfully developed using chemiluminescent MOFs. When comparing the analytical performance of MOFs, COFs, and MOGs for analytes such as glucose, their efficiency is almost comparable.
