چکیده مقاله:

DNA databases are a type of biological storage that stores genetic information. This narrative review will discuss the development of forensic DNA profiling and the importance of DNA databases in forensic investigations. Since the first use of DNA analysis in biological samples in a criminal case, a revolution in forensic investigations was created by a sub-field called forensic genetics. Today, by developing DNA databases of people and comparing them with the DNA profiles extracted from the biological samples obtained from the crime scene, it is possible to identify the criminals. DNA databases are often employed in forensic investigations. When a match is made from a national DNA database to link a crime scene to a person whose DNA profile is stored on a database. Research shows that DNA databases of criminal offenders reduce crime rates. The number of reference samples collected in DNA databases worldwide, including Iran, is on the rise. DNA databases can also be utilized for other purposes, such as identifying bodies that have not been identified. Considering the impact of forensic genetics on people's lives, and the advances in DNA sequencing, this study emphasizes the development of forensic Genetics laboratories and DNA databases in Iran.
