Determining Complications of Neurological System in Patients After Kidney Transplantation in Northwest Iran

Background: Kidney transplantation is a life-saving procedure for patients with end-stage renal disease. However, postoperative complications, particularly those affecting the neurological system, can significantly impact patient outcomes. This study aims to evaluate the neurological complications in patients following kidney transplantation in northwest Iran.Materials and methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study involving ۱۰۰ kidney transplant recipients at two major hospitals in northwest Iran from January ۲۰۲۳ to June ۲۰۲۴. Patients were assessed for neurological complications using clinical evaluations, neuroimaging, and electrodiagnostic studies. Data were analyzed for incidence, type, and severity of complications, along with associated risk factors.Results: Neurological complications were observed in ۲۵% of the patients, with the most common issues being peripheral neuropathy [۱۲%], cognitive dysfunction [۸%], and seizures [۵%]. Risk factors associated with complications included older age, diabetes mellitus, and prolonged dialysis duration. The majority of complications were manageable with appropriate medical interventions.Conclusion: Neurological complications are a significant concern in kidney transplant recipients. Early detection and management are crucial for improving patient outcomes. Regular neurological assessments should be integrated into post-transplant care to mitigate these risks.
