Prevalence of enteric viruses in raw seafood collected from the retail shops in Tehran, Iran, ۲۰۲۲–۲۰۲۳

Introduction and Objective: Although significant achievements in food security and environmental protection have been reported in recent years, there are still risks of contamination of seafood by common pathogens such as bacteria and viruses. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate prevalence of pathogenic viruses linked to seafood hygiene in raw seafood samples collected from seafood retailers in Tehran, Iran. Methods: In general, ۲۰۰ samples (۱۰۰ fishes and ۱۰۰ shrimps) were collected from the seafood retailers in Tehran, Iran. RNA was extracted from the samples and then cDNA was synthetized. Technically, cDNA was used in polymerase chain reactions to amplify the targeted genes. For the adenovirus, DNA genome was extracted from the virus and directly used in polymerase chain reactions. Data were analyzed using SPSS Statistics ۲۹.۰.۱۰. Results: From ۱۰۰ fish samples, ۴۸, ۲۴, ۳۲, ۳۵, ۵۶ and ۵۵ samples were contaminated with adenovirus, astrovirus, hepatitis A virus, hepatitis E virus, rotavirus and norovirus respectively. From ۱۰۰ shrimp samples, ۵۱, ۴۷, ۲۸, ۴۷, ۴۹ and ۴۷ samples were contaminated with adenovirus, astrovirus, hepatitis A virus, hepatitis E virus, rotavirus and norovirus, respectively. Conclusion: In conclusion, the present study has shown that raw seafood can still be a major public health concern. Therefore, it is strongly recommended to use systematic monitoring systems and improved hygiene measurements to decrease risks of seafood contaminations and hence foodborne infections and outbreaks in consumers.
