Investigating the features of self-healing concrete

Today, one of the most important challenges in the construction industry is related to the weaknesses of concrete as one of the most widely used building materials. Occurrence of cracking is one of those weak points which is inevitable and very significant because concrete after cracking can face all kinds of damage and cause the overall weakness of the structure. To deal with this problem in the past, methods were used that were difficult to do and also caused environmental problems. The alternative method that scientists have achieved is to make and use a type of concrete called self-healing concrete or living concrete, which is able to repair the cracks created by itself. In addition to reducing problems related to maintenance, this concrete is not harmful to the environment and also helps the durability and performance of concrete and increases the useful life of the structure. In this article, first of all, the types of self-healing methods in concrete are introduced, and then the benefits and applications in the construction, repair and strengthening of structures are discussed.
