Estimating the number of medical science journals needed for publishing Iranian researcher’s articles

Introduction: The aim of this study was to predict the needed journals of Medical Sciences for publishing researcher’s articles. Methods: This study is an applied one and was done by using a descriptive survey methodology. Statistical population of this study includes all the (۳۴۱ medical journals) and (۱۱۳۶۹۳ researchers) of Ministry of Health and Medical Education. To estimate the optimal number of required journal, the ratio of full-time equivalent Coefficients researchers was used. A researcher-made checklist was used to collect the data and excel software was applied for analyzing the data. Results: The findings showed that ۸۲/۴۰% of journals have academic affiliations and ۱۷/۶۰% of journals have non-academic affiliation. ۴۳/۱۱% of journals are in Farsi, ۵۵/۷۲% in English and ۱۷/۰۱% in Farsi - English. In terms of publication period, ۴۵/۶% of the journals are monthly, ۱۱/۷۳% bimonthly, ۷۳/۳۱% quarterly and ۸/۵۰% are biquarterly. In terms of ISI impact factor, ۵/۸۷% of the journals received ISI impact factor and ۸۹/۱۵% of the journals are indexed in the ISC database, that ۴۳/۹۹% of them has ISC impact Factor. Furthermore the findings showed that generally, ۵۷۹ medical journals are needed for ۲۷۸۴۱ articles of researchers. Discussion and Conclusion: the number of scientific journals in Ministry of Health & Medical Education is very low and more journals are needed to cover the research.
