Comparing Suicidal Ideation, Defense Mechanisms, And Psychopathic Features In Addicted Males And Females

Drug addiction (also known as substance dependence or substance use disorder) is a chronic disorder that leads to a variety of medical and mental conditions. Many psychological factors have relationships with drug abuse, including suicidal ideation, defense mechanisms, and psychopathic features. These factors are very different between men and women and merit further investigation. The purpose of our study is, therefore, to determine how male and female Iranian drug addicts differ in their suicidal ideation, defense mechanisms, and psychopathic characteristics. We distributed a questionnaire, composed of DSQ-۴۰, BSSI, and LSRP, to ۱۱۲ (۵۶ males and ۵۶ females) drug abusers in Guilan province, Iran. After gathering the data, SPSS ۲۶ was used for data analysis. The results showed a statistically significant difference in suicidal ideation between men and women addicted to drugs, but not in defensive mechanisms. Additionally, there was no statistically significant difference in psychopathic features between men and women addicted to drugs. Psychiatrists and counselors who work with drug-dependent people should pay close attention to their defense mechanisms, suicidal thoughts, and psychopathic traits. By understanding these variables, we can provide better and more appropriate care to these patients.
