A Fast Mode Decision Method for Intra Predictionin HEVC

The HEVC standard is being developed by jointcollaborative team on video coding (JCT-VC). The HighEfficiency Video Coding (HEVC) is an emerging standard thatachieves higher encoding efficiency when compared to previousstandards such as H.۲۶۴/AVC. improve the coding efficiency ofintra frame, up to ۳۵ intra To prediction modes are defined inHEVC. A list of candidates for Rate Distortion Optimization(RDO) is formed by considering all the ۳۵ intra prediction modesusing a process called Rough Mode Decision (RMD). We notethat each intra-mode processing in RMD is quite computeintensive. To alleviate this computation load, this paper proposesa new method to reduce the number of intra-prediction modes inRMD process. In this proposed method, a candidate list is createdwhich includes only ۱۷ modes instead of ۳۵ modes used inreference software. Then reduce selected mode from prior stepbased on angular direction. The proposed method provides adecrease of up to ۳۲.۰۸% in the HEVC intra predictionprocessing time, with a little increase in the bit-rate (۰.۹% onaverage) and a negligible reduction in PSNR values.
