This article provides an in-depth exploration of contemporary developments in water treatment, with a focus on sustainable technologies and resource recovery strategies. Traditional water treatment methods serve as a foundational backdrop, and the narrative unfolds through cutting-edge innovations that address environmental concerns and align with the principles of a circular economy. The journey begins with an examination of emerging technologies such as membrane bioreactors (MBRs), forward osmosis (FO), and electrochemical treatment, each contributing uniquely to the sustainable purification of water. Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) and graphene-based filters take the spotlight for their efficacy in pollutant degradation and selective adsorption. The role of nanotechnology is unveiled in diverse applications, from filtration to sensing, contributing to the paradigm shift in water treatment. Nature-based solutions, including constructed wetlands and green infrastructure, are explored for their ability to harness natural processes for water management while preserving biodiversity. The article navigates through solar desalination techniques, showcasing the integration of renewable energy sources for freshwater production.
