Electric transportation powered by clean energy sources provides a promising pathway for reducing greenhouse gas emissions from the tourism sector. However, challenges such as range anxiety, lack of charging infrastructure, and high upfront costs have hindered the widespread adoption of electric vehicles. Recent advances in artificial intelligence (AI) offer new opportunities to accelerate the transition to sustainable electric transportation in tourism. This paper reviews applications of AI in areas including intelligent charging coordination, automated driving, trip planning, and mobility-as-a-service that can optimize electric vehicle operations, efficiently manage charging, and improve the electric travel experience. An AI-enabled framework is proposed for integrating electric vehicles with smart grids, ridesharing platforms, and travel apps to achieve environmental and economic benefits. Case studies of pilot projects demonstrate the feasibility of AI solutions in real-world tourism contexts. The analysis suggests AI and machine learning will be critical to unlocking the full potential of electric transportation for decarbonizing tourism in a socially inclusive and cost-effective manner. Policy measures to incentivize AI adoption for sustainable tourism are discussed.
