Hydrocyclones, recognized as highly efficient separators in various sectors, have attracted significant interest for their capacity to separate particles from fluids. In both biotechnology and the food industry, the utilization of hydrocyclones enhances operational efficiency, improves product quality, and promotes environmental sustainability. Their capacity for separating particles according to size and density makes them invaluable tools for various separation and purification processes within these sectors. Employing Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations and advanced modeling methods to improve the design and geometry of hydrocyclones can lead to increased separation efficiency and reduced energy consumption. Through refining hydrocyclone design and geometry, researchers endeavor to boost performance, fostering sustainability and efficiency across industries such as food production and biotechnology. The present review delves into the application of hydrocyclones within the realms of food science and biotechnology, which have seen a surge in attention recently. It explores the impact of CFD on advancing hydrocyclone technology and underscores specific design enhancements tailored for the food industry and biotechnology sectors. Moreover, this review considers innovative methodologies and discusses recent studies focused on maximizing the performance of hydrocyclones.
