Background: Substance abuse refers to a disorder in using a psychoactive substance throughrepeated or continuous consumption of that substance. Substance abuse affects all aspects ofindividuals' health, especially their mental health. Mental health is a state of psychologicalwell-being that enables individuals to understand their abilities, cope with life stresses, andfunction optimally. The long-term nature of substance abuse emphasizes the importance oflong-term rehabilitative interventions, particularly emphasizing rehabilitation counseling.Rehabilitation counseling is a therapeutic approach aimed at supporting individuals withlong-term disorders to achieve independence. Therefore, the present study was conducted inorder to determine the effectiveness of rehabilitation counseling on the mental health ofindividuals with substance abuse.Methods: This article was conducted by reviewing the related resources in Science -Direct,Google-Scholar, Medline, Elsevier and Cochrane-Library databases between ۲۰۱۹ to ۲۰۲۳,based on the keywords. Afterwards, among the primary ۲۶ articles, ۱۴ articles wereselected and reviewed.Findings: According to the reviewed studies, rehabilitation counseling for individuals withsubstance abuse has been implemented with various approaches, including psychoanalysis, cognitivebehavioraltherapy, emotion-focused therapy, humanistic therapy, holistic therapy, existential therapy,group therapy, and family therapy. These approaches were implemented both virtually and in-person,at home, treatment centers, and addiction clinics. Following the interventions, significant reductionswere observed in sleep disorders, stress, anxiety, and depression among the participants. Additionally,improvements in self-control, self-awareness, self-confidence, and self-esteem, along with healthierand more effective interpersonal relationships were reported.Conclusion: According to the findings, rehabilitation counseling has significantly contributed to theimprovement of mental health in individuals with substance abuse. Therefore, considering thesignificance of mental health for optimal functioning of individuals with substance abuse, alongsidethe desirable functioning and health of families and society, it is recommended to consider necessaryactions in order to implement such approaches in this group of individuals.
