Scale and Scaling in Landscape Sustainability:International Insights

Landscape is a conceptual notion that is typically perceived at a local scale in the mindsof the public. However, larger scales such as regional, national, and international scaleshave held significant importance in landscape studies, especially in the fields ofmanagement, supervision, and planning. In the context of landscape sustainability, scalehas always been one of the fundamental challenges. This is because changes in scaledirectly impact the determination of sustainable development strategies. Moreover, asscales become larger, numerous challenges emerge in the analysis of spatial patterns andprocesses, drawing conclusions about them, and ultimately making decisions regardingthe future of ecological regions. The present research aims to, first and foremost, definelarge scales (regional and beyond) and introduce the existing challenges associated withthem. Subsequently, by focusing on the metrics already present in the landscape research,it will provide a brief overview of studies conducted on scale changes in the analysis ofspatial patterns within the landscape. Finally, by introducing some successfulinternational experiences and models, it presents the prospects of applying theseexperiences and models in other countries.
