The role of infections in secondary infertility: a brief review

Introduction: Considering that secondary infertility is one of the most important infertility among women andvarious factors are effective in the occurrence of this health problem, therefore the present study was designedwith the aim of determining the role of infections in the occurrence of secondary infertility.Methods: The present study was a summary review that was designed in ۲۰۲۳. To search for keywords, ۱Persian database (SID) and ۳ English databases (Scopus, PubMed and Google Scholar) were used. The selectedkeywords included "infection", "infertility", "secondary infertility" and "sexual infections". At first, ۷۶ articleswere retrieved, after removing duplicate articles and articles published in conferences and conventions, finally۱۷ articles were selected for data extraction.Results: By examining various studies, it was found that secondary infertility has various factors, the mostimportant of which include pelvic infections and sexually transmitted diseases. Common pelvic infectionsinclude infection due to infectious abortion and fetal bones remaining in the uterus, ectopic pregnancy, fallopiantube damage and blockage, and uterine tube adhesions. Other causes of infection include postpartum infections,endometriosis, infections caused by Chlamydia trachomatis, Neisseria gonorrhoeae, Escherichia coli andHelicobacter pylori. Preeclampsia, parasites such as Trichomoniasis, fungi and induced abortion are alsodirectly related to secondary infertility.Conclusion: In general, infections seem to be effective as one of the risk factors in the occurrence of secondaryinfertility, so people can use related educational programs to increase their awareness.
