Identification of blaNDM-۱,virulence factors and plasmid replicon typesin Carbapenem-Resistant Salmonella spp. in Kerman, Iran

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVESSalmonella species (spp) are the most prevalent zoonotic pathogens that cause outbreaks ofgastroenteritis in the world, so evaluation of the profile of antibiotic resistance and the potentialpathogenicity of these bacteria is necessary to prevent the spread of potentially pathogenic anddrug-resistant strains.MATERIALS AND METHODSIn this study, ۳۹ Salmonella spp. were isolated from fecal samples of the chicken farm and theantibacterial susceptibility of isolates was determined by disk diffusion. β-lactamases (bla)including ESBLs, AmpC, MBLs, and virulence genes were detected by PCR and plasmidincompatibility groups of the isolates were identified by using PCR-based replicon typing(PBRT).RESULTS AND DISCUSSIONThe most prevalent virulent gene was phoP/Q (۸۴.۶%) and slyA, sopB, and stn were identifiedin ۷۹.۴% (n=۳۱), ۶۹.۲% (n=۲۷), and ۲.۵% (n=۱) of the isolates, respectively. The antibioticsusceptibility testing showed that ۳۰.۷% of the isolates were ESBL-producing. blaTEM (۴۱%;n=۱۶) was the most β-lactamases gene among the isolates and followed by blaNDM-۱ (۱۵.۴%;n=۶), blaDHA (۷.۷%; n=۳), and blaCTX-M (۱.۵%; n=۱). Six different replicon types, includingIncP (n=۹; ۲۳%), IncFIC (n=۳; ۷.۷۰%), IncY (n=۳; ۷.۷۰%), IncI۱-Iγ (n=۲; ۵.۱۲%), IncFIIAs(n=۱; ۲.۵۶%), and IncN (n=۱; ۲.۵۶%) were identified using PBRT method.CONCLUSIONOur study showed the emergence of carbapenem-resistant and blaNDM-۱ among Salmonella spp.for the first time in Kerman, Iran. Since Salmonella spp. plays an important role in thetransmission of resistance genes in livestock and humans in the food chain; more stringentcontrol policies are recommended to prevent the circulation of drug-resistant and potentiallypathogenic strains from animals to humans.
