چکیده مقاله:

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVESBacterial infections and their transmission are a major threat to human health. Currently, antibiotics are the main treatment for these infections, which has inevitably led to the rapid emergence of antibiotic-resistant bacterial species in recent decades. It is therefore necessary to develop a new strategy to inactivate bacteria. Plant extracts containing antimicrobial compounds are good candidates for eliminating resistant bacteria. The aim of this study is to investigate the antimicrobial effects of oregano (Origanum vulgare) extract against Staphylococcus aureus and hospital-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae bacteria.MATERIALS AND METHODSThe alcoholic extract of the oregano plant was followed by MIC and MBC tests against two MDR and hospital standard isolates of Klebsiella pneumoniae and Staphylococcus aureus.RESULTS AND DISCUSSIONThe minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) for standard bacteria is ۰.۵ mg⁄ml and also for resistant bacteria, Staphylococcus aureus is ۱ mg⁄ml and for Klebsiella pneumoniae is ۰.۵ mg⁄ml.CONCLUSIONPlant extracts with antimicrobial compounds can be used to destroy bacteria that are resistant to all types of antibiotics, significantly reducing the prevalence of antibiotic resistance.
