چکیده مقاله:

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVESAntibacterial resistance has increased dramatically worldwide over the past few years and is nowrecognized as a major challenge in most countries. Therefore, today the use of plants withantimicrobial properties has increased in a large part of the world, especially in developingcountries.Ferula plant is a member of the Apiaceae family, which has more than ۱۷۰ species and isdistributed from Central Asia to West to North Africa. Most species of Ferulahave a strong odor due tooleoresin. The bioactive compounds of these plants, including sulfur-containing compounds, terpenoids, coumarins, and sesquiterpenes, can have antimicrobial properties. So, the purpose of thisstudy was to investigate the antibacterial effect ofthe aqueous extract ofFerula foetida oleo-gum resinon some Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria.MATERIALS AND METHODSFerula foetida oleo-gum resin was collected from Beirut village,RazaviKhorasan. To prepare theaqueous extract of F. foetida oleo-gum-resin, ۲۵ grams of plant gum wasadded to ۲۵۰ ml of distilledwater and shaken for ۴۸ hours at a speed of ۱۵۰۰ rpm, at ۳۷°C. Then the solution was filtered withsterile gauze and filter paper and freeze-dried for ۲۴ hours. Finally, ۷.۹۰۸ g of aqueous extract wasobtained and stored in a freezer at -۷۰°C.To evaluate the antibacterial effects of the obtained extracton Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus agalactiae, Listeria monocytogenes,Corynebacteriumbovis, andEscherichia colithe minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and the minimum bactericidalconcentration (MBC) of the extract were determined usingmicrodilution method in microtiter plateswith cation-adjusted Mueller-Hinton brothaccording to the clinical and laboratory standards institute(CLSI)protocols.RESULTS AND DISCUSSIONFor Streptococcus agalactiae, Listeria monocytogenes, andCorynebacteriumbovis, the MIC ofFerulafoetida oleo-gum-resin aqueous extractwas ۴ mg/ml. For Staphylococcus aureus andEscherichia coli,MICs were determined to be۸mg/ml and more than ۳۲mg/ml, respectively. The MBCsof the extractwere ۳۲ mg/ml forStreptococcus agalactiae andListeria monocytogenesand more than ۳۲ mg/ml forStaphylococcus aureus,Corynebacteriumbovis, andEscherichia coli.CONCLUSIONTheextract is more effective againstStreptococcus agalactiae andListeria monocytogenes.Thebacteriostatic activity of the extract isstronger than its bactericidal activity.
