Chromium ions effects on Sb۲O۳-PbO-GeO۲ glass properties for radiation protection

In this work we studied the radiation shielding features of Li۲O-Sb۲O۳-PbO-GeO۲-Cr۲O۳ glass systems at different energies ranging from ۰.۲۸۴ to ۱.۳۳ MeV. The maximum linear attenuation coefficient (LAC) for the germinate glasses is in the order of ۰.۶۸۰-۰.۷۰۷ cm-۱ and this is reported at ۰.۲۸۴ MeV, whereas the minimum LAC is observed at ۱.۳۳ MeV and varied between ۰.۱۵۹-۰.۱۶۶ cm-۱. An increase in the LAC is found for these glasses due to the addition of Cr۲O۳, and the glasses coded as C۵ (with ۰.۵ mol% of Cr۲O۳) has the highest LAC. The half value layer (HVL) of the selected glasses with different contents of Cr۲O۳ is investigated, and the results demonstrated that the HVL is small at low energies and ranging from ۰.۹۸-۱.۰۲ cm at ۰.۲۸۴ MeV and from ۱.۳۲۸-۱.۳۸۳ cm at ۰.۳۴۷ MeV. The maximum HVL is observed at ۱.۳۳ MeV and equal to ۴.۱۷۵ cm for C۵ and ۴.۳۵۲ cm for C۱. The tenth value layer (TVL) values for the present glasses were reported, and the results showed that as the density increases from ۳.۰۷ to ۳.۲ g/cm۳, the TVL decreases from ۳.۳۸۸ to ۳.۲۵۶ cm at ۰.۲۸۴ MeV, and from ۱۳.۴۱۳ to ۱۲.۸۶۸ cm at ۱.۱۷۳ MeV.
