Relationship between High-risk Behaviors and Academic Achievement and its Associated Factors among Students of Nursing and Midwifery

Background & Objectives: High-risk behaviors are defined as behaviors, which jeopardize the health and well-being of teenagers, youngsters, and other community members. In this study, we aimed to determine the relationship between high-risk behaviors and academic achievement and identify the associated factors among students at Nasibeh School of Nursing and Midwifery, Sari, Iran. Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted on ۲۰۰ students at Nasibeh School of Nursing and Midwifery, Sari, Iran. Sampling was carried out among students who were in the third academic semester (or higher). A researcher-made questionnaire was used to gather data on subjects’ demographic characteristics, academic achievement, and high-risk behaviors. For data analysis, t-test, ANOVA, and Spearman test were performed, using SPSS version ۱۶.۰. Results: Among ۲۰۰ students of nursing and midwifery, ۸۲ were male (۴۱%) and ۱۱۸ were female (۵۹%). The mean age of the participants was ۲۱.۵۸±۱.۵۱ years. There was a significant relationship between academic achievement and high-risk behaviors such as cigarette and hookah smoking (P ۰.۰۵). Based on the findings, subjects’ academic achievement was significantly correlated with age and parents’ educational level (P۰.۰۵). Conclusion: The results showed that high-risk behaviors influence students’ academic achievement. Therefore, in order to promote the quality of education, factors, which affect students’ academic achievement, should be taken into account.
