چکیده مقاله:
Introduction: Carbon dioxide (CO۲) laser is an available technological tool for laryngeal surgeons. Given the importance of laser outcomesand complications, this research was conducted to identify the complications associated with laser surgery in the patients referring to the۵th Azar Medical-Educational Center in Gorgan, Iran, from ۲۰۱۳ to ۲۰۱۷.
Methods: This descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted on ۸۵ patients with laryngeal lesions who underwent microscopic surgerywith CO۲ laser at the ۵th Azar Medical Educational Center in Gorgan, Iran, from ۲۰۱۳ to ۲۰۱۷. The patients were examined for the associated short-term complications ۱, ۷, and ۲۱ days after the operation. They were also examined after ۳ months to determine the long-term complications and patient satisfaction with sound quality. The data were analyzed in SPSS software (version ۱۶). A p-value less than ۰.۰۵ was considered statistically signifificant.
Results: Out of the ۸۵ patients undergoing laser surgery, ۶۰ (۷۰.۶%) cases were male. None of the patients experienced short-term complications. In terms of long-term complications, ۲ (۲.۳۵%) cases, who had failed to perform the follow-up, had recurrent lesions after ۳ months of surgery. In addition, ۱۸ (۲۱.۸%) subjects had recurrent hoarseness, ۱۸.۸% (n=۱۶) and ۲.۳۵% (n=۲) of whom were detected with laryngeal carcinoma and recurrence, respectively. However, a total of ۶۷ (۷۸.۹۱%) cases did not suffer from long-term complications. In this study, out of ۸۵ patients undergoing larynx surgery, ۶۹ (۸۱.۲%) cases had benign pathology, while the rest (n=۱۶, ۱۸.۸%) had malignant pathology.
Conclusions: It seems that a CO۲ lasersurgery that follows scientific principles can produce good outcomes.
