The Comparison of Illness Anxiety Disorder with Panic Disorder Based on meta-diagnostic cognitive Structures: pain catastrophizing and anxiety sensitivity

Considering the high coexistence of panic disorder and illness anxiety disorder, the aim of the present study was to compare illness anxiety disorder with panic disorder based on pain catastrophizing and anxiety sensitivity. The current research method was a comparative causal one. The statistical population of this research was made up of all patients suffering from Panic Disorder and anxiety disorder who had been referred to psychiatric and psychological clinics of Urmia city in ۲۰۲۳. The research sample consisted of ۲۲ patients with Panic Disorder and ۲۲ patients with Illness Anxiety Disorder, who were selected in a non-random and purposeful manner. Research tools included Anxiety Sensitivity (AS) (Taylor and Cox, ۱۹۹۸) and Pain Catastrophizing Scale (Sullivan et al., ۱۹۹۵). The data were analyzed with multivariate analysis of variance tests in SPSS software version ۲۶. The results of variance analysis showed that there is a significant difference between the two groups of Panic Disorder and Illness Anxiety Disorder in terms of anxiety sensitivity and catastrophizing structures. Based on the findings of the research, the constructs of anxiety sensitivity and pain catastrophizing are common cognitive constructs in Panic Disorder and Illness Anxiety Disorder; Despite this, people with Panic Disorder suffer from significantly greater anxiety sensitivity.
